Because of the Arriva strike Jan 6-12 Northern Rail are allowing ticket holders to use the trains as far as Sunderland and Whitby. They are also allowing Pass Holders to do the same. The only snag is you will have to get to Stockton to start  any journey south as there are no Arriva services from Hartlepool to Stockon to be 'replaced'.  So if you want to get to Whitby on your pass this is the week to do it.
Your pass also takes you as far as Sunderland on the train.  Pass holders in Sunderland are also allowed to use the train between Sunderland and Newcastle for free so you can again use your pass from Sunderland to Newcastle. If you want to go on to the Metro Centre then your  Bus Pass allows you to do it for 50p.
If you have a Pensioner  bus pass and like to travel now is the week to fill your boots!

We have been informed that Stagecoach North East will accept all Arriva tickets in Teesside from weekly and upwards in all formats and also Middlesbrough College Student ID cards on their services that are along the line of or close to Arriva routes. Northern Rail will accept travel on the services listed below for passengers holding valid Arriva day and season tickets, along with free travel for concessionary travellers (after 0930) and relevant college id cards for the duration of the industrial action.
* Bishop Auckland – Darlington
* Darlington – Stockton (Thornaby) – Middlesbrough
* Saltburn – Redcar – Middlesbrough
* Whitby – Nunthorpe – Middlesbrough
* Hartlepool – Seaham – Sunderland

Tickets can be presented on paper, on a smartcard or on the Arriva Bus mobile app.
