Hartlepool Alert
5 June 2014 ·
The Leader of Hartlepool Council is optimistic about the town's future and forecasts that the next twelve months will result in further positive progress.
Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher was speaking after it was revealed that he will continue to lead the Council after Labour maintained 19 of the 33 seats on the Council following the recent local elections.
The former local government employee, who also currently works part-time for Hartlepool Healthwatch, was appointed Leader of Hartlepool Council in May 2013 following the abolition of the elected mayor which saw a return to the committee system.
Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher said: "When I became Leader of the Council last May I gave a commitment that Hartlepool would be a listening council and that's exactly what we've done. One of the major decisions of the last 12 months was to withdraw the Hartlepool Local Plan. It was abundantly clear that the very large majority of residents were not happy with certain aspects of the plan - particularly the proposed gypsy site - and it was the right decision to take a fresh look at the plan to ensure it meets the needs and aspirations of townspeople.Consultation is now under way on the new Local Plan and I urge local people, the business community and others to take the opportunity to contribute to the debate and help shape the future of our great town."
Councillor Akers-Belcher cited the launch of the Hartlepool Vision at the turn of the year as the most significant milestone in securing future prosperity for Hartlepool.
The radical new blueprint aims to revitalise the centre of Hartlepool, spark the town's wider regeneration and lay the foundations to create growth and jobs over the next 15 years. The Vision includes eight key sites. They are the town centre, Jacksons Landing/Trincomalee Wharf and the Marina, Church Street, Seaton Carew, the Headland, Wynyard, the Port and Queens Meadow.
Councillor Akers-Belcher continued: "Since we launched the Hartlepool Vision, I have been overwhelmed by the number of businesses - both within the town and outside Hartlepool - who want to come along with us on this exciting journey. Already real estate company M Seven has purchased the Highlight Retail Park in the Marina and has exciting plans to extend the site and create 50 new jobs in the process. We've also seen entrepreneur Brian Morton buy into the Church Street vision with the major refurbishment of the Hillcarter Hotel, including additional new en-suite bedrooms."
Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher said he was proud of many Council achievements over the last 12 months. These include:
* The introduction of free swims and free transport for children during the Summer school holidays. This will be repeated in 2014.
* Free car parking in town centre car parks in the run-up to Christmas.
* Creating and encouraging modern apprenticeships through the Hartlepool Youth Investment Project. Recent figures show that youth unemployment in Hartlepool has dropped from 17% to 10.6%.
* Working with the Esh Group to revitalise key areas of Seaton Carew.
* A seven year agreement with technology provider Northgate, safeguarding 235 jobs and creating 35 apprenticeships.
* Identifying funding to help hard pressed families suffering from the Government's welfare reform changes.
* Working with Hartlepool College of Art and Housing Hartlepool to provide much-needed student accommodation on the former Crown House site.
* Brought over 100 empty homes back into use and worked with housing companies such as Keepmoat who are building 82 new properties in the Perth Street area.
* Agreement to create a new memorial on the Headland in memory of those sadly lost in the 1st World War.
* The second most improved GCSE results in the country - up 10% on the previous year.
* Creating more opportunities for members of the public to participate in Council meetings, including the establishment of weekly Council Leader surgeries.
Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher concluded: "In the weeks and months ahead I am confident that there will be more positive announcements to make which will further demonstrate that Hartlepool is on the up and very much open for business."

Love the bit about being a listening council.  But doesn't it work on the idea that you listen and act on what you are being told.
What can be asserted without proof,
can be dismissed without proof.

There are a number of our politicians who appear to suffer from this particular disorder.

IMHO there are one or two on here who display similar symptoms .........."arrogant, with an inflated self-image and disregard for the feelings of others.". ;)
