Parts of central Hartlepool are closed off as the Wesley is on fire. What a waste - such a graceful building.

P.S.  No conspiracy theories, please (we'll  leave any answers to the forensics people).  :-X

We were down there  last night, the roof well ablaze, it looks like the end, though you live in hope. What a shame if we lose one of our really iconic buildings. Doubtless of the worst happens, we'll be offered a car park/ performance area, but the front columns must be retained if feasible.

I would have preferred the building to have been described as the 'Wesley Chapel' as opposed to the "Wesley Nightclub"...... :-\

A lovely building lost, as knacker says we will be an outpost the towns getting like a ghetto totally f**c***.

Do we have a heritage champion we can press for a statement?

I would also keep an eye out for any unemployed people going on long haul holidays
I don't believe it.

Good point, the words 'Wesley' and 'Nightclub' aren't really complimentary.

GOOD NEWS
Engineers have attended the Wesley site this morning and found the building to be structurally sound after last night's dramatic fire - hopefully this near loss will provide the impetus required to see the site renovated and one of Hartlepool's most iconic buildings brought back into use.

Hopefully something positive can come out of this with maybe grants etc we cant let this building go as have others - http://www.victoriansociety.org.uk/news/hartlepools-former-wesley-chapel/

Hopefully Hartlepools eritige and istry czar will be able to point the owners in the direction of suitable grant funding organisations.

What a pity action couldn't have been taken earlier, it would have been a lot cheaper.
As for not letting this building go as others have, who has been running the council since Boadecia?  They let them go.

You do not have to set a building alight yourself if you want rid of it to get at the land. You just neglect security. You 'allow' break-ins and  pilfering because it creates a situation where sooner or later someone will set it ablaze. You may have to wait a while but you can be sure one day  it will happen.

Christmas just came early for them this year!
