City bid is 'key' for Hartlepool

Published on Tuesday 1 January 2013 12:20

THE key to Hartlepool's economic prosperity could lie in the Tees Valley city deal bid – and in getting schools to develop the next generation of business bosses.

That was the prediction today of Damien Wilson, the Hartlepool Borough Council assistant director of regeneration as he spoke to the Mail about the challenges facing the town in 2013.

But he admitted it was a tough challenge in a town where youth unemployment was the third highest in England and Wales.

"It's a big challenge and we have to try and crack that nut," said Mr Wilson, above. "We have to persuade existing employers to consider apprenticeships and these could hang on the Tees Valley wide city deal bid.

"We have to make sure that the Tees Valley bid puts forward our investment opportunities and our job creation opportunities. We have to create modern apprenticeships and wider investment plans."

The Tees Valley, including Hartlepool, is one of 14 areas bidding for a city deal. If successful, it will be invited to negotiate a deal with the Government allowing some powers to be devolved from Whitehall. But in order to succeed, Tees Valley has to show – by January 15, 2013 – how it will create growth and new jobs.

Mr Wilson said: "We have got one chance to be successful. It could give us a greater degree of control at a local level. We have to convince the Government that we have a credible governing structure in place."

The cities bidding for the deal are: the Black Country, Bournemouth, Brighton and Hove, Greater Cambridge, Coventry and Warwickshire, Hull and Humber, Ipswich, Leicester and Leicestershire, Milton Keynes, Greater Norwich, Oxford and Central Oxfordshire, Reading, Plymouth, Preston and Lancashire, Southampton and Portsmouth, Southend, Stoke and Staffordshire, Sunderland and the North East, Swindon and Wiltshire, and Tees Valley.

But a city deal is not the only area of hope for Hartlepool.

Mr Wilson added: "We have got to start to grow our own businesses at a higher rate than we are currently doing.

"We need to encourage entrepreneurship as early as possible and that is primary school as well as comprehensive school."

The scarcity of jobs is a problem but Mr Wilson said: "If you are an entrepreneur, you can create your own job. That is the challenge for schools as well as individuals and agencies."

So when these 'local powers' are given to Mallon he is going to hand them on to the mob?

Great. Now let's stop harping on about a non existing Tees Valley and let's create an environment in Hartlepool where business wants to come and where new businesses can be created.

We have enough problems of our own, we don't need Middlesbrough as another millstone around our neck.

I repeat what i said on another thread.......... Thank goodness someone else got the promotion, there are a fair number of prophesies & forcasts that can be attributed to Mr Wilson, i haven`t been to impressed with any of them.

The preoccupation some Officers of HBC seem to have with Tees Valley Unlimited is rather worrying for Hartlepool, we don`t want to be assimilated into another Smog Monster Fifedom, so if they are so keen on joining up with the Boro....... they should bugger off & work for Middleborough Council.

"Mr Wilson said: "We have got one chance to be successful. It could give us a greater degree of control at a local level. We have to convince the Government that we have a credible governing structure in place."

Who exactly does this fella mean when he says "We"............. we were raped & pillaged when in C.C. he should be concentrating on Hartlepool & only Hartlepool.

If this bloke knows so much about entrepreneurship, how comes he isn`t out there in the big wide world of the "Private Sector" earning a fortune, instead of opting for the safe & sound public sector ???

Looking at the next round of cuts......... some of the fantasists that are employed by HBC should be looking over their shoulders.

Here is the link for the original communication from H.M. Treasury. There are twenty bids, (not fourteen) expected.

This sounds like a job pitch by Wilson - is there a current vacancy going within Mr Mallon's Boro that he has his eye on?
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

"HARTLEPOOL'S hopes of a bright economic future took a blow in 2012 – and it was down to "a significant deterioration in the UK economy", says a leading town expert.

Antony Steinberg, the Hartlepool Borough Council economic development manager, said a mixed 12 months had left the town "with uncertain prospects" although there are some bright spots."

They seem to be all at it. We've had The Pope, The Archbishop of Canterbury and David Cameron all giving us the benefit of their 'New Year Message'; now it seems the suits at the Kremlin think we need to hear their thoughts at the start of the new year.

We've had Damien Wilson tell us that we should go all out to join Mr Mallon's City Region and now we have his underling chipping in. The New year Message above from Mr Steinberg , the Hartlepool Borough Council economic development manager, is classic and seems to be suggesting that before the current UK recession everything was rosy in the Hartlepool garden - talk about finding the nearest coathanger to hang your problems on. I seem to remember that things were pretty much sh**e even before the recession. For example, there were already 30+ empty shops in Middleton Grange before the recession started.

"a mixed 12 months had left the town "with uncertain prospects" although there are some bright spots." makes Mr Steinberg sound a little too much like a weather forecaster commenting on what has already happened rather than actually doing something useful to change it. If all he is doing is sitting behind his desk, drinking coffee and tapping his fingers while waiting for the UK economy to turn around then what exactly is the point of him being there?
