Melting of polar ice sheets has added 11mm to global sea levels over the past two decades, according to the most definitive assessment so far.

More than 20 polar research teams have combined forces to produce estimates of the state of the ice in Greenland and Antarctica in a paper in Science.

Until now different measurement means have produced a wide range of estimates with large uncertainties.

But sea-level rise is now among the most pressing questions of our time.
Polar ice has a tremendous capacity to cause massive rises - with huge potential impacts on coastal cities and communities around the world.

But the remoteness and sheer size of the ice sheets mean accurate measurements are a serious challenge even for satellites which have to distinguish snow from ice, and the rise of the land from the shrinking of the ice

The new estimate shows that polar melting contributed about one-fifth of the overall global sea level rise since 1992; other factors include warming that causes the seawater to expand.

The study does not seek to forecast future change.

Supported by US and European space agencies Nasa and Esa, the research brought together data from satellites measuring the surface altitude, the flow of the glaciers and the gravitational effect of the ice mass to produce the first joint assessment of how the ice sheets are changing.

Be careful Rabbit.  You must have gathered by now that the words of MK1 and perseus are not to be questioned.  Like me, you will by now have been earmarked for depsatch to the Gulags
They both subscribe, in totality, to the BBC / Guardiaista - leftist elite's orthodoxy that must not - IN ANY WAY - be queried or questioned.

Namely..............................
1) Man made'climate change and the entire GREEN / GLOBAL WARMING / doctrine, and the Industry that has formed around it, must not be questioned, otherwise expect a torrent of hysterical abuse.
Never expect that the fact that the earth's climate has fluctuated in violent extremes - NATURALLY -  over several millenia and we've still survived will ever be allowed to enter the debate.  The intelligensia of the leftist elite have spoken and must be obeyed.
2) The surrender of national European democracies to an UN - elected, UNDEMOCRATIC bureaucracy (the EU) is not to be questioned.  Failure to accept their strictures will result in the same abusive treatment.

You will note that there is a common denominator in both of the above examples - YOU - the taxpayer are being screwed rotten to support both of these outrageous and obscene scams.
Utility bills are all subject to a 'green levy'- currently about £300 a year, per household .  That's nice of them usn't it?
And collectively we are sending £53 million (soon to be more) per DAY to the EU to facilitate our transformation from a sovereign democracy to a vassal state - YIPPPEEEE!

Still, anyone who raises such objections to our humiliating decline into penury and servitude is classed as 'odd' and in need of therapy.

You work out the logic Rabbit.

If there was a degree course in bo*llo*cks you would  get a first.
Cold war rhetoric with outdated allusions to 50's paranoi. overuse use of capitalisation. Not forgetting the obligatory dig at the EU.
A one message party doomed to the fringes of politics.

I note that only about one fifth of the rise in sea water levels has been attributed to the melting of ice caps.

The other 80 percent is not explained in the report.

It has been agreed by the science fraternity that global warming is occurring, but there is not a universal agreement on its cause.

From a scientific viewpoint. it is impossible to be 100 percent certain about anything. Science can only work in probabilities and give advice based on their reasoning of a particular issue.

It is fair to say that the majority believe it is mankind that is to blame for the warming. Thus the government are spending our money in trying to alleviate any man made effect.

The minority reason that the warming is natural and we are wasting money and resources in trying to redress a problem which is not mankind`s creation.

The other 80% occurs as a result of simple expansion of the oceans as the mean temperature has risen.

Climate fluctuations have occured naturally for millions of years but until recently, always during times when the human population was both minimal and scattered. Even if today's climate change is entirely natural, the impact of the human race is far more critical because of the way the species has grown and developed and the way we have arrange ourselves to live predominantly in cities and towns. We have developed as a trading species dependant on each other and can no longer provide all of our needs individually.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

The other 80% occurs as a result of simple expansion of the oceans as the mean temperature has risen.

The report actually states:The new estimate shows that polar melting contributed about one-fifth of the overall global sea level rise since 1992; other factors include warming that causes the seawater to expand

They do not state how much warming  is involved to cause expansion. Is the ocean simply expanding due to heat input? Again, this is a topic of debate as it is unclear how much of "missing global warming" is trapped in the ocean.

I agree very little is 'exact' regarding science, I thought your point though, in drawing attention to the 'cold winter stories' was to present it as evidence that global warming was a myth? That's how it appeared.

No I didn`t post it with that intention.  I would not dispute global warming. I think we should not necessarily wholly swallow "accepted wisdom". The reasons for global warming are generally accepted to be caused by mankind but there are well argued alternative points of view.

In posting the extract on cold winter deaths, I was illustrating that there are present problems that could be addressed here and now. If the global warming is down to mankind, then this must date back contimously to our own Industrial Revolution (say 200 years).
