This sort of in-fighting is fairly typical of the Labour Party in 2015 and the Hartlepool manifestation must surely be one of the worst examples - factions within factions and temporary allegiances built on sand.

Brash's departure from the group was a prime example and the recent letter to the Secretary of State demonstrates just how it is sheer spite which drives the Labour engine. Brash was by far the best placed person to draft such a letter and probably knows more about the issue than anyone else within the council. However, Labour would rather stick needles through their eyeballs than let such a thing happen even if it meant sending a half-baked, ill thought out letter instead  which the Secretary of State seemed to have no problem ridiculing for it's vagueness.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.
