We never have had an explanation as to why Ray Wells, after declaring a prejudicial interest in the Wynyard development, was allowed to go on and speak at length in support of its planning application on September 25th last year. Nor has it ever been made clear what the nature of that prejudicial interest was.

Most councillors in this position would have excluded themselves from the meeting immediately - but not our Ray.

So how reassuring does everyone find it that the man has been made Chairman of the Audit and Governance Committee, the committee which amongst other things is there to ensure all council business is carried out legitimately and above board?

The constitution makes it clear that the Chair of Audit and Governance must NOT be given to a councillor from the ruling group. So what is the difference when it's given to a group in coalition with the ruling group?

I have a feeling that this is the year when the true extent of just how corrupt this council is will finally break surface. It might therefore be a good idea for council officers to start giving some thought as to which side of the fence they will be found on when it does.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.
