An interesting item from Sky News which shows the geographically uneven effects of the recession in the UK with London and the South-East not experiencing a recession at all. The item is given a surreal twist with the appearance of our very own Angie Wilcox talking of starving people at her door. Of course, like London and the South-East, Angie herself has proved to be one of a limited number of economic growth areas during the recession.

Interesting that the story shows how the gap between the economies of the South-East and regions like the North East has grown larger since 1995 - 13 years of which were spent under a Labour Government.

". . . there is evidence that the gulf in experience is greater in the UK than elsewhere.

According to official EU figures, the disparity in real incomes between regions in the UK is greater than in any other European country.

An economic paper produced by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills a couple of years ago found that while the regions of Britain converged economically more than other major countries between 1950 and 1985, between 1995 and 2007 they have diverged more than in other nations."

Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

Interesting to see that Sunderland grabbed it's chances to stimulate growth - a city not far from Hartlepool, and one which has seen it's own share of economic problems over the years.

Another article from the BBC talks of some rather 'interesting' schemes to boost the northern sector of the economy.

Trouble is that I wouldn't be too sure that some of the HBC lot would even try that hard...supplicants are much more malleable than those with aspirations for improvement... ;)
