I could hardly believe my eyes when i read this in the Mails election coverage.

CARL RICHARDSON. (LABOUR).

"As a socialist I believe in being accountable to the people who elect me.

"I have always worked closely with resident associations and promoted them not just at election time.

"Along with Labour colleagues I campaigned for alley gates, thereby reducing burglaries in the town centre by over 50 per cent.

"I have the experience in being able to challenge and fight the Con/Dem cuts which are ravaging our public services while this Government cuts tax for the rich.

"I want a town where local people are more involved in the decision-making process where our local services are run for the people and not just for profit.

"I believe in a free education and health service, which also means a hospital in Hartlepool including an A&E ward.

"Only by voting Labour on May 3 will you send a message to this Government to change course."

marky

LOL....I don't think we need to send a message to the Government; we need to send a message to Comrade Carl  ;D  Actually, I could tell you what it is but I reckon admin would kick it off in a blink.... ;D ;D

Are there actually any laws against telling blatant lies in election leaflets?

CNUT ::)

Showing off again........are you making a comparison between this King's failure to turn back the tide with Ray seeing his chances ebbing?

PS:

Yes there are, and if as a result of the lies, the person telling them gets elected, the losers have the right to have the election re-run.

Not to mention that candidate and agent could find themselves in serious trouble with the law.

for fawkes sake

Is there something in this cuckoo leaflet that isn't true? Haven't seen it myself so enlighten me.
"Remember, remember the fifth of November.
Gunpowder, Treason and Plot.
I see no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot."

S.T.

Lies you talk of being a Labour councillor in this town.
Bit rich isn't it?

For those who have a primary purpose in life to misunderstand and misquote others, there is no where in my post, that I indicate that there is anything untrue in any leaflet. Although I am aware of at least one that states that our hospital is due to close in the next few months.

The question was asked, about blatant lies in election leaflets and whether there is any law against it.
My answer so that it is quite clear, is yes there is law against it. That is why election literature is required to carry an imprint showing who produced it and who printed it. Both parties being liable along with the Agent of the candidate concerned.
