I was speaking to my mate who works there around a fortnight ago and he said they were about to lay people off.

I haven't seen him since but he has worked there for a number of years now and he generally gets laid off around this time and is back within 4-6 weeks. I guess they do it in between contracts?

The steelworks as was......................20" pipe mill, first proper job I had. £25 a week for shifts and felt as though I had the world at my feet. Out 7 nights a week to the Blackies, Stranton, Clanny and Grange amongst others. Happy days and still see lads I used to work with 8)

There is no such thing as a permanent job, workers are taken on and laid off as the orders come and go.
One part I believe of EU Laws we didnt want, Agency Employees have the same rights as permanent employees, so compamies can `hire and fire` as and when they want.

The 20" mill has always been very profitable its the 44" that is a temporary steel plant, thats where the jobs will have gone.
