Very noticeable last night were the publicly subsidised, UNISON Orangutans sat in their defensive corner. As a debate on a £10,000 donation to the food bank progressed, it decended for a while into a 'who created the need for food banks' spat.

Cllr Wells claimed that the Trussel Trust, the Church organisation behind the new food bank, was set up in 1997 at the start of the Blair Government - conclusion: that the need for food banks began under a Labour Government. The smirk on his face suggested that he was convinced that he had scored a point but in jumped Cllr Ainslie telling us that he had done his research into the organisation and that in fact, the trust was first set up under the tail end of the Major Government.

...... cue howls of laughter and applause from the Orangutans.

To us observers, the real conclusion was that the usual party politicing was far more absorbing and interesting to the assembled primates than the work of the food bank itself.

Given the Trust's non-political stance, it would be nice to think that they were in a position to tell this grubby shower to shove their donation where the Orangutans keep their nuts but of course pragmatism will rule the day. Let the politicians squabble - we're too busy trying to feed the people.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

I wonder if the Simeon Brothers are on pay whilst attending Council Meetings ???? if they are, are they on the Overtime rate, or are they taking Friday afternoon off on the Flexi time deal.

So poignant; the food bank projects are a laudable example of altruism. Why am I shocked but not surprised to learn that there are elements within HBC who consider fellow humans' misfortune to be material for cheap jibes? Sick... :'(

They will  do as they all do. Smile through gritted teeth and shake the hands of the Don as they are (in a Mail photo opportunity) hand  the cash.
5 years down the line Freeman SCAB 1 is shocked to read a leaked report that  says  that all along they thought he was grandstanding and  more interested in helping his mates become millionares than helping the 'poor'!

It's a shame that such genuine organisations have to allow themselves to be contaminated by such people in order to fund their activities.
