Looking at this, is the cost in renovating the building worth it ?

There are many reasons postulated for the construction of Stonehenge but as far as im aware none of them included providing luxurious housing for a wealthy elite? So im stuggling with your claim that Stonehenge and Tunstall court were built for the same reasons?  I have never claimed to be an aspiring socialist, the phrase i used was aspirational socialist and I never actually applied it to myself, it was used in the third party. Aspiring socialist and aspirational socialist may seem the same but taken in context  have a major difference in meaning. I actually used it a bit tongue in cheek as I borrowed it from another poster who used it on another thread on this site to describe his political leanings.  I also wonder why you find use of a latin phrase worthy of comment? We use quite a few in the English language! Unless you are implying that aspiring socialist (as you describe me) equates to uneducated?  A rather sweeping generalisation I would say, and somewhat insulting to a large number of very highly educated  people I know who have political leanings left of centre. Custodiat non solum ignorantia sinistrae  ;)

Ok...let's keep it simple...I find it disturbingly odd anyone should condemn a mere building on the basis of their political prejudices.

The whole point is..... why was it allowed to get into that state in the first place...?

Well I find it disturbingly odd that anyone should condemn the use of a latin phrase on the basis of their prejudices about uneducated, socialist, maybe you think we are all just plebians  :)  I also struggle to understand how anyone can think Stonehenge and Tunstal Court were built for the same reason? However, lets keep it simple by all means. I think Tunstal Court needs knocking down because its too far gone to renovate without huge amounts of money being spent on it. Money our council don't have and  when there are much higher priorities, in my opinion, for the cash they do have.  If Tunstal Court had been viable as a wedding venue, wine tasting location or any other commercial use then no doubt it would have been converted into such a venue long ago by a commercial concern. Times change, buildings fall out of use and we need to move on. As you seem to like old stone erections Hartlepool used to have a town wall, what a great tourist asset that would be if we still had it today!  Sadly tbe stone was re-used centuries ago. Personally I hope the bulldozers run out of control at the old manor house on the headland. There is another monstrosity that neeeds demolishing.!

Morecambe Winter Gardens was in a worse state before people that cared about it stepped in to restore it - here's their website: http://www.thewintergardensmorecambe.co.uk/home/

By the way, Latin was standard fare in the old (state) grammar school system!

Along with this quote and your original post I think you've answered all my questions beyond my expectations.
Could you kindly list all the buildings in town that warrant demolition on the basis of your interpretation of your  own dogma. I look forward to it.

There's an interesting report attached to the application to have Tunstall Court demolished which essentially blames HBC for its demise. The report suggests that because HBC has, over a long period of time, allowed similar properties to be demolished as well as allowing housing development to encroach on the original Tunstall Court site the historical significance of Tunstall Court has itself been diminished.

In other words, because HBC has shown little or no interest in preserving the town's heritage in the past by acting to preserve its historical buildings Tunstall Court has already lost some of its historical value through having housing development on its doorstep instead of open land.

Typical of Wells, though. Knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

If this property is owned by a private company why would the council need to spend money on it?

I'd be happy to answer that question when you tell me how you came to the conclusion that Stonehenge and Tunstal Court were built for the same purpose and why it is worthy of comment that an "aspiring" socialist" (your phrase not mine) used a Latin quotation. I personally think the latter told me all I needed to know about your prejudices and dogma but I look forward to hearing what you think your reasons are for sneering in this way.

In the spirit of co-operation I will say Jackson Landing would be high on my list of buildings to knock down. I'd love to see a bold, imaginative building on that fantastic site, something that would be iconic and immediately recognisable as being Hartlepool.

Well we can agree on that point...but sadly it appears somone has regretable plans for that particular site involving a ferris wheel being buzzed on the hour by the Red Arrows....... and  probably several empty shimmering aparment buildings at unfeasible prices....they call it a vision.

West Park and Socialists ....seriously.

I believe most residents around West Park are aspiring capitalists overpaying for the privelige of not living next door to the working class.

What a nasty comment.  You might believe that Land Phil but it doesn't necessarily mean it's true.  I was brought up at Owton Manor and Rift House, and living in West Park doesn't make me an aspiring capitalist.  I've worked hard to get where I am but I don't forget where I came from, nor do most of the people I know in my area.

Next you'll be saying we were all born with silver spoons in our mouths - we're not all Ray Wells who jumped on his fathers coat tails, and we don't all behave like him, approve of him or admire him either.

My understanding is that the Furness Family gifted Tunstall Court to West Hartlepool Council in 1948.  They may have been having problems with the upkeep/death duties.

Either way it was 'gifted'.  Once ot stopped being a college there seems to have been a lack if imagination in what to do with it.  I expect HBC grabbed what money was in the site and ran.

:) well, as I've learned, that's how these boards operate. Insults and sarcasm are more common than reason and debate! just don't let the buggers grind you down!

Just a shame so many West Park Residents go out and vote for him......lol.....of course up there it is in most of their DNA to vote Tory regardless of who the candidate is, the "silver spoon brigade" and those not born there but who have "made it to behind the park" usually are, I'm afraid to say, "aspiring capitalists overpaying for the privelige of not living next door to the working class". Well done if you are one of those who don't forget where you came from, but not many of the people I know in your area seem to remember. Champagne Socialist almost to a man!

Not quite true, if you check out the Winter Gardens on 28dayslater website, there are pictures of the building from 2007 - 2012, they show the interior as in near pristine condition, when compared to Tunstall Court.
