HARTLEPOOL COUNCIL PRESS RELEASE

Council steps up Church Street revival

HARTLEPOOL Council is seeking to recruit a heritage officer to help breathe new life into a key area of the town.

The Church Street Innovation & Skills Quarter is one of eight priority areas identified by the Council to be transformed as part of the Hartlepool Vision to spark regeneration, create jobs and ensure future prosperity.

The authority is set to receive almost £7m in grant funding to help deliver the ambitious project which will see empty buildings brought back into use, road and pedestrian improvements and the area become a hub for creative industries.

£5.5m of the funding is earmarked through the Local Growth Funding from the Tees Valley Local Enterprise Partnership with £1.2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The ambitious plans to revitalise the area have already received a huge boost with the building of a new £11m Cleveland College of Art and Design which started earlier this year.

The three-year fixed appointment for the Townscape Heritage Project Officer is vital to help implement the exciting plans.

Councillor Kevin Cranney, chair of the Council's Regeneration Services Committee, said: "The aim is to breathe new life into Church Street but retain and build upon the area's heritage and historical past.

"We are striving to create a vibrant environment where creative industries can thrive, providing new job opportunities for local people.

"Currently, too many young people leave Hartlepool after studying in search of work elsewhere and this initiative aims to reverse this trend."

A series of consultation events about the redevelopment of Church Street will be held over the summer

The post which is advertised at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/careers requires the successful applicant to have "a good working knowledge of Heritage Lottery Fund schemes as well as experience in heritage-led regeneration".

The Band 10 post has a salary range of £25,440 to £27,924. The closing date is Friday 10 June.

For an informal discussion, contact Sarah Scarr at Hartlepool Council on 01429 523275.

Could Councillors Cranney give us an example of a 'creative industry' he has in mind?

Sounds like waffle aimed at securing grant money to me and certain Bly not VISIONary

I walked through Church Sq & down Church St, 3pm ish yesterday, the traffic really was quite heavy something else the Regenerative balloons don't have an answer for, but the street as a whole has diabolical block paved walkways that could only be cured by ripping the lot up.

There are a few business premises in good condition, Atkinson Print, the Thai restaurant, Sambuccas, Golden Gate, but by and large the rest of the properties are in very poor condition, in some cases totally derelict.

The skills quarter bulls**t is just hanging onto the coat tails of CAD in lower Church St, unless of course the skill Cranney is talking about is bricklayers, joiners, plumbers & sparks, to refurbish the area.

As a council tax payer I have to ask myself, who is going to benefit from this pisspotical delusion, the only answer I can come up with is, The Usual Suspects  :) :) :)

Peoples socialising habits have changed over the years especially the 35 plus group, Church Street will never return to the days when on a Saturday in the decent weather it was shoulder to shoulder, people going from Bar to Bar etc.
What planet do the Councillors live on, we see Bars,Restaurants open and close on a regular basis on the Marina so how are they going to attract business to Church Street at least on the Marina you have a decent view.

No you're out of date. Church Street is going to be a Skills 'ub and only recently had a Takeaway application thrown out.

All of this makes me laugh. The College of Art came up with plans to expand, offer more degree courses and secured both the funds to rebuild itself and a relationship with Bournemouth University to make it happen. This is all good stuff but in no time at all the plans were hijacked by the cabal who claimed it was all part of a Vision.

Hats off to the College of Art and its expansion plans but just as one swallow doesn't make a summer, one college expansion scheme doesn't make a skills quarter.

HBC have no idea what a skills quarter is and even less of an idea how to create one. So far, they have got their hands on some money, paid more than the market price for the old Post Office (to the delight of the owner, no doubt) and done the usual thing when they have a scheme like this and started the recruitment of an extra body. They won't have done any real marketing to assess just what demand there will be for the units in Church Street. This is the same mistake that City Challenge made as they rushed to spend the £37m they were given. Church Street was supposed to end up looking like Yarm High Street but no one wanted to know and in a last minute panic, they let the units to whoever came along which at that time was the likes of the Willkies.

Don't be surprised if Cranney already has someone in mind for this vacancy.

Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

Kevin F*anny will be starting IT Training at 'is' 'ub and you can bet  members of the F*anny Clan will be given a cast iron assurance that council funding and free premises will be given to any who  locate in Church Street.

Specially made, apparently.

The Shades? Closed & Vandalized. What kind of vision does that instill on this pipe dream ? It had it's  licence revoked regular outbreaks of violence one man had the side of his face bitten off.

Church Street is unwelcoming there is Begging Druggies & Low Life and those frequently seen outside the food bank with their designer clothes and state of the art mobile phones.

Yet we're led to accept the hype that H.B.C put out that it's going to be like the Costa Del Sol.

Sun. Sex. & Sangria. Oh and a couple of palm trees thrown in for good measure. I THINK NOT.
