A SERIES of changes to junctions and traffic signals is proposed to improve the flow of traffic through Hartlepool town centre and reduce delays.

The changes which are due to be introduced next week, involve the junctions at York Road/Park Road, York Road/Victoria Road and the A689/Huckelhoven Way.

The proposals include:

York Road/Park Road junction
For traffic travelling west along Park Road, re-allocating the left hand lane for vehicles turning left into York Road and the right hand lane for vehicles travelling straight on.

Allowing vehicles travelling east on Park Road to turn left into York Road.

York Road/Victoria Road
Allowing traffic travelling east along Victoria Road to turn right into York Road.

A689/Huckelhoven Way junction
Changing the sequence of the traffic lights at this junction which currently operate on separate northbound and southbound phases on the A689, so that both phases run at the same time. There will be a right turn phase for both northbound and southbound vehicles following this.

Peter Frost, Hartlepool Council's Highways, Traffic and Transport Team Leader, said: "The current junction arrangements were introduced a number of years ago and traffic volumes have increased since then, leading to congestion and queues of traffic at times.

"We believe all of these proposals will help to encourage a better flow of traffic around the town centre and lead to shorter queues at some junctions."

The proposed changes have all been subject to full consultation via the Council's Traffic Liaison Group which includes representatives of the emergency services and bus companies. They have been advertised as required by law and there have been no objections.

Signs are to be put in place to ensure that motorists are aware of the changes.

Thank goodness they have finally looked into the traffic flow in town, some of the baffling traffic light sequences were a pain in the backside.

The classic is the 7 crossing junction near the Mail Office. There are times when both pedestrians and traffic are all stood motionless waiting for something to happen. The sequencing of the lights is a complete mess.
Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

Great so now as before;

To access York Road 'North' travelling West up Park Road.

I have to Turn Right at Osborne Road / St Paul's Road Right at Victoria Road / Murray street Traffic Lights then up to York Road.

I wonder who thought this would ease Traffic Flow.

It's just to safeguard Council jobs. Probably paid for by the Government by a safety grant.
